Gifted and Talented

The mission of the Grand Prairie School District is to see that all students learn and achieve to the full extent of their individual abilities in an effective school environment.  As a result of this commitment, the GPISD Gifted and Talented Program was developed to ensure that our most able learners are challenged to meet their highest potential and that curriculum and learning opportunities are in line with their needs, interests, and abilities.  The district's goals for meeting the need of unique population include:

  • implementing and ongoing identification process of screening and selecting students in grades K-12 based on multiple and specific criteria (both qualitative and quantitative) through the use of a selection committee
  • developing and implementing an array of learning opportunities that are appropriately differentiated and substantive in grades K-12 and are linked meaningfully to the core content areas of language, math, social studies and science.
  • providing ongoing and appropriate training and staff development opportunities for administrators, counselors, and teachers involved in serving the needs of gifted and talented students.
  • providing parent education opportunities and soliciting parent and community involvement to promote collective participation in the G/T Program.
  • implementing a design for evaluating the effectiveness of the G/T Program by using relevant, data-based information  for the purpose  of continued program improvement and development.

Elementary gifted students take part in a pull out program in grades 1-5.  Instruction for this regularly scheduled class is provided by a campus Gifted Specialist.  Curriculum units at this level are interdisciplinary and based on broad themes.  These units incorporate logical, critical and creative thinking skills into the core academic areas of math, reading, science and social studies.  Independent research opportunities allow students to investigate specific topics of interest and to develop sophisticated products.
